Counselling

Couple / Relationship Counselling

St Peters House values the privilege to be able to offer low cost couple counselling to the Tauranga community. Couple counselling provides a safe place to share your emotions, thoughts, challenges and the issues that are troubling your relationship. These may include communication, parenting, stress, betrayal, marriage breakdown, grief or loss.

Counselling is non-judgmental, confidential and designed to encourage you to gain insights into yourself, your life and to live with greater awareness, choice and fulfillment. Counselling works best when you can self reflect, are willing to go deeper, work on the relationship between sessions and stick with it.

How the counsellor will work with you
  • The approach our counsellors use helps people explore the effects that problems are having on aspects of their lives, build awareness and discover the strengths they have and choices they can make to move forward.
  • A dedication to the process is required.
  • Counselling sessions are usually scheduled for one hour.
  • Counsellors will respect your beliefs, values and culture
  • Counsellors will not tell you what do. They are there to support you towards making your own decisions.

About our Counsellors
Our couple counsellors are fully qualified, have had specialist couple counselling training and are registered with a relevant professional body such as the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) or New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association (NZCCA).

Couple Counselling at St Peters House
  • Our couple counselling service is for short-medium term interventions, generally up to 12 sessions.
  • Counselling is provided for Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty residents only (Waihi Beach to Pukehina).
  • Our couple counselling is in high demand so we often have waiting lists of up to 8 weeks. We do close the list when the wait time exceeds this.
  • Sessions are 1 hour long and start between 9am and 3pm.  The more flexible you can be with your availability the sooner we may be able to offer you an appointment.
  • It is our practice to not have children in counselling sessions, however, exceptions can be made e.g. for breastfed babies.  Feel free to call us if you want to discuss your specific circumstances.
  • Subsidised fees apply for all couple counselling sessions (see payment table below).

We do not provide couple counselling for:
  • Relationships involving domestic abuse or ongoing family violence
  • Separated couples who need help with co-parenting, parenting plans or facilitating the separation.
  • Family relationships (e.g. parent/child or siblings)
  • Drug and alcohol, gambling or other addictions
  • Acute sexual abuse (i.e. a person who has been recently assaulted)
  • Complex mental health issues – personality disorders, schizophrenia, bi-polar, psychosis, severe eating disorders or dementia
  • Acute risk or safety issues
If you need help finding another agency to work with you on these issues please contact us.

It is important that there is commitment and consistency to couple counselling from both partners in order for progress to be made.  Please ensure that you are able to attend during our working hours and will be able to leave work, arrange childcare etc.
