Counselling

Professional Counselling

St Peters House provides a safe place to share your emotions, thoughts, challenges and the issues that are troubling you. Counselling is non-judgmental, confidential and designed to encourage you to gain insights into yourself, your life and to live with greater awareness, choice and fulfillment.

Counselling can empower you to deal with the issues that have had, or that are currently having a negative impact on your life.

People come for counselling for a range of reasons
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Grief, Loss and Bereavement
  • Stress
  • Communication
  • Family or Relationship Issues
  • Anger
  • Parenting
  • Self esteem and identity issues
  • Loneliness or a sense of emptiness
  • Suicide Bereavement
  • Major life changes e.g. redundancy, ill-health etc.
  • and much more.

How the counsellor will work with you
  • The approach our counsellors use helps people explore the effects that problems are having on aspects of their lives, build awareness and discover the strengths they have and choices they can make to move forward.
  • Counselling sessions are usually scheduled for one hour.
  • Counsellors will respect your beliefs, values and culture
  • Counsellors will not tell you what do. They are there to support you towards making your own decisions.

About our Counsellors
Our counsellors are fully qualified and are registered with a relevant professional body such as the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) or New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association (NZCCA).
We also have a student counsellor working with us.  Where appropriate, we will discuss with you if you are happy to work with a student.  Our students are Year 3 or above, hold a student or provisional registration with NZAC or NZCCA and are subject to close supervision.

Counselling at St Peters House
  • Our counselling service is for short-medium term interventions, generally up to 8-10 sessions.
  • Counselling is provided for Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty residents only (Waihi Beach to Pukehina).
  • We have waiting lists for our counselling so you may have to wait up to 6 weeks for an appointment.
  • Sessions are 1 hour long and start between 9am and 3pm.  The more flexible you can be with your availability the sooner we may be able to offer you an appointment.
  • It is our practice to not have children in counselling sessions, however exceptions can be made e.g. for breastfed babies.  Feel free to call us if you want to discuss your specific circumstances.
  • Your first 6 counselling sessions with us are fully subsidised, so they are free of charge. Fees based on your income apply for any subsequent session you have (see payment table below).
  • If your counselling is relating to suicide bereavement we are able to access funding to provide you with 10 free sessions. Please ask us about this.
  • St Peters House is a charity, we have to raise considerable funds to be able to offer this service.  We encourage you to consider making a financial contribution for all sessions if you are able.

We do not provide counselling for:
  • Individual children under the age of 12
  • Drug and alcohol, gambling or other addictions
  • Acute sexual abuse (i.e. a person who has been recently assaulted)
  • Complex mental health issues – personality disorders, schizophrenia, bi-polar, psychosis, severe eating disorders or dementia
  • Acute risk or safety issues
  • Counselling students who are needing to come to counselling to fulfil their course requirements
